Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge - 26 miles, 3 Mountains over 5,500 ft in total
We awoke in the Golden Lion Bunkhouse at 5.30am to heavy snowfall which under any other circumstances, the hike should have been postponed! Treacherous conditions consisting of climbing icy rocks and paths, getting hit by hailstones that felt like shards of glass and coping with 50mph winds with a wind chill of -6. Without a doubt, each and every member of the team should be incredibly proud of their individual achievements.
Team Testosterone consisted of the breakaway boys who braved perilous conditions and rock climbs coming back in 10 hours and 10 minutes – in pain and broken....
Sam Hagger, Jim Smith & Ben Rowland with guest appearances from Michael Scott. Ignoring advice from a local farmer to not go on, beating a team of young whippersnappers through a black bog and joining with a team of Mountaineers from Sheffield University (92 members of their group didn’t turn up due to weather conditions), the boys had quite a journey... not least, Ben Rowland’s singing “What’s that coming over the hill, is it a Robo, is it a Robo?” for ten hours.
Do not ever fly in an aeroplane with the boys, if anything should happen, you would be eaten first.
Kate Whitehead, Stu Endacott accompanied by Richard Cook, arrived safely back in 11 hours and 55 minutes – an absolutely brilliant effort by the middle team for working together to get each other through. Incredible work! It was no mean feat for Kate to be the only girl to complete the challenge in time, she had a back injury and is undergoing physio still
Third team and bringing up the rear and coaching each other through abject fear, Lizzie Falkner did an absolutely stirling job and pushed herself to the limits to conquer Pen Y Ghent, a personal goal well achieved! We soldiered on, losing another walker at the 16 mile mark! Finally completing 22 miles and conquering the second mountain, Whernside, before having to call it a day due to remaining daylight hours and worsening weather conditions and zero visibility.
