They provide objective advice, specialist expertise and awareness of industry best practices. Many have come from top tier strategy houses, gained industry experience and are now doing it for themselves.
The reality is an independent consultant can provide similar expertise at a much cheaper cost than utilising a management consultancy. It is unrealistic to think that independent consultants will ever compete like for like with management consultancies and the infrastructure they can offer. However there are benefits; they are answerable only to your company, their time is not split between a multitude of client engagements, they are not incentivised to sell on further projects and often they have more real industry experience. They should be used to the dynamic of being thrown in at the deep end, reaching out to all areas of the business and going deeper than high level analysis. Hiring an Independent also offers flexibility and not being tied into lengthy, costly agreements.
The demand for this resource has increased, with the scope of projects varying greatly from client to client. The large corporations have started hiring greater numbers of independent strategists. Perhaps this is due to the improved market; no longer are companies solely looking at cost cutting exercises but now seeking new revenue streams, perhaps through M&A and new market opportunity.
Projects can go from short term focused pieces of work up to longer temporary assignments and even those with the potential to go permanent. Temp to perm is becoming increasingly popular, especially at times when a resource is needed on short notice and/or involving a new team build.
