Job description

Our client, are looking to hire a head of finance, to start in 2022. The role is part time and will be 2.5 days a week. They are based in Berkshire but the role is fully remote. You will ideally have experience working within the charity sector.


The Head of Finance post is an active participant in the charity Senior Leadership Team

Technical Pre-requisite - Qualified Accountant (ACA; ACMA; ACCA).
Competencies - Accustomed to operating at a senior level with full financial responsibilities. An exceptional team leader and player, with strong IT skills. Charity experience preferred.

The prime role is to provide finance guidance and leadership in:

  1. Reporting and delivering monthly financial results.
  2. Producing quarterly forecasts and annual budget.
  3. Actively reviewing and managing cash with reliable updated weekly forecasts.
  4. Ensuring our shared services function delivered by Career Connect (CC) operates effectively.
  5. Operating as the lead and a key player in the annual audit.
  6. Providing commercial insight to new projects
  7. Be our lead contact with Barclays Bank; CCLA and HMRC.
  8. Communicating clearly, develop and nurture effective working relationships with:
    • Trustees
    • All project managers (PM's), including senior leadership team (SLT).
    • Shared services staff



Expanding on some of the above:

  1. Month End - Interrogate and provide in-depth analysis on our actual month and year to date results. Support this with a clear commentary so key issues are understood by SLT and Trustees with action taken as required.

  1. Forecasting & Budgeting - Track our progress to the quarter end focusing on the on the quality and reliability of charity and project revenue forecasts. Lead the annual budget process with the full engagement and support of project managers; review and re-fresh budgets at Q2 end. Present budgets to the board for approval.

  1. Cash Management - Review in detail the rolling short term cash forecast prepared by CC, in a weekly Zoom call. Clear and approve the weekly supplier BACS run and hold fortnightly calls to chase up on aged debt balances.

  1. Shared Service - Work with their shared service to improve the AP / ARand GL services they provide to the charity. Specifically so they can:
    1. Deliver accurate month end reports for the charity and to project managers
    2. Support and build positive working relationships with our PM's.
    3. Underpin the quality of reporting with monthly balance sheet reconciliations of cash, AR, AP, deferred & pre-paid income, accruals, prepayments etc.

  1. Year End Audit - Lead the audit with CC support to ensure prepared by client requirements are ready on arrival for the audit team, then handle and resolve audit queries as they arise. March is year-end and the "on-site" audit is completed in August with the Trustee Report and accounts filed in November.

  1. New Projects - Support the HoCS in revenue growth with new bids to ensure they secure contracts with advantageous terms.
