Job description
The Infrastructure Team is part of Group Technology and is responsible for implementing and maintaining a multi-site hybrid IT infrastructure. Functions include:
- working closely with other areas of Group Tech (infosec, applications, service desk, properties) to ensure operational effectiveness, security and efficiency
- working closely with project delivery teams and architects in a technical and design capacity to ensure the smooth transition of project outcomes to operations
- utilizing industry standard technologies and processes to provision IT infrastructure solutions in line with the technology strategy
- delivering tasks based on project objectives and technically supporting projects through to completion
The role of the infrastructure engineer is to help design, implement and maintain appropriate infrastructure solutions to make our business more effective. The candidate will provide technical expertise and bring industry knowledge and best practice with them, unafraid to challenge established ways of working and striving to identify the core issues and best possible operational outcomes. They will be an IT expert in multiple infrastructure areas, able to provide deep technical knowledge, experience and expertise to ensure that solutions are run and implemented robustly, securely, and successfully. The candidate will be a hands on technical expert with a proven track record of operational and project work. The role reports to the Head of Infrastructure but will work very closely with all areas of Group Tech and project delivery teams across the business.
We are seeking somebody who has strong technical skills and a depth of technical experience. You should also be proactive, self-motivated, able to work independently and as part of a technical team. You will be able to demonstrate knowledge and experience with regard to a number of standard technologies. In addition, you should possess most of the following skills:
- History of successful infrastructure role(s) within a large Plc/blue-chip environment
- History of successful multi-component infrastructure implementations
- History of successful operational activity including troubleshooting, monitoring and securing infrastructure systems in a 3rd line support role
- Deep technical understanding of Microsoft operating systems, technologies and environments
- Deep technical understanding of hypervisor/virtualisation , storage, backup, recovery, cloud environments and server technologies
- Deep technical understanding of physical hardware and datacentre operations
- Expertise in Linux operating systems
- Expertise in database technologies (e.g. SQL, Postgres, Oracle)
- Knowledge of networking sufficient to troubleshoot issues and liaise with network specialists
- Analytical thinking: the ability to tease out underlying issues and filter out distractions.
- Ability to manage project change ensuring the deliverables still align to the objectives.
- Experience of managing third party suppliers to deliver in line with the project roadmap.
- Good understanding of operational requirements for long term support of a system
- Good knowledge of system support tools such as Visio, Confluence, Jira, Service Now, M365
