Network Engineer

Hybrid working

North Yorkshire

Reporting to the IT Network Services Manager the role is accountable for delivering world class IT network management services across the core network.

The role will be responsible for the end to end delivery and performance of Wide and Local Area Network from its delivery partners and individual networks across the estate.

The role will lead a team to meet our ongoing operational business requirements:

  • Assist in the development of core network strategy including network design and roadmap.
  • Changes to the core network to meet ongoing business demands.
  • Delivering continuous service improvement.
  • Emergency response to critical incidents.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES



Day to Day Operations

Key areas include:

Operational Performance

  • Manage and ensure effective operation of the IT core network, including but not limited to:
    • WAN - circuits, routers, firewalls, load balancers and other components that enable devices to connect to broader services spanning wider geographical areas.
    • LAN - cables, access points, switches and other components that enable devices to connect to local services.
    • Internet and Cloud Service Access.
    • Data Centre Connectivity.
    • Secure Wi-Fi (Office and Manufacturing).
    • IT Disaster Recovery.
  • Ensure all relevant core network hardware, software/firmware is within supported life. Work with vendors to obtain, schedule and implement updates.
  • Review and respond to out of hours critical incidents as required.
  • Support the IT Network Services Manager and Senior Network Engineer for core network major incident resolution ensuring coordination of resolving parties.
  • Manage key supplier relationships to ensure services are delivered within agreed timescales.
  • Enforce core network policy and procedure.
  • Deliver effective 3rd line support ensuring adequate resource is allocated.



Operational Monitoring & Reporting

  • Monitor, control and support the core network; ensuring methodologies and procedures are in place and followed.
  • Ensure IT hardware and services are maintained within agreed objectives and appropriate Service Level Agreements [SLA].
  • Provide IT network operational statistics to the IT Operational leadership team.


Continuous Improvement

  • Ensure that outstanding incidents, requests and problems are reviewed regularly such that agreed service levels are maintained.
  • Review incidents/problems to ensure processes are being accurately followed in accordance with IT policies and procedures.
  • Maintain an understanding and documented library of the IT core network, standards, procedures and policies.
  • Ensure asset management processes are accurately followed in accordance with IT policies and procedures.


Future Development

Day to Day Change

  • Deliver changes to the core network in response to business requirements.
  • Deliver projects within agreed timescales.
  • Ensure all changes are implemented in a formal and controlled manner and the appropriate level of communications are taken when implementing change.
  • Ensure technical and operational documentation is created prior to project handover to support (BAU).
  • Changes to the environments are effectively managed to restrict any infrastructure downtime.


Cyber Security & Infrastructure Improvement Programme (CSIIP)

  • To support the IT Network Services Manager, work with CSIIP to help shape and develop the individual core network projects. Provide feedback into the project scoping and design activities.
  • Working with the Programme and Service Delivery teams, to ensure project work is smoothly transitioned in to BAU. Signing off upon completion.
  • Throughout the programme make sure technical and operational documentation is created prior to project handover to support (BAU).

QUALIFICATIONS


  • Degree in Computing or equivalent.
  • CompTIA Network+.
  • CCNA minimum
  • ITIL - V3/V4 Foundation.



KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE



Essential

  • Minimum of 3 years' experience supporting/managing core networks for a large multi-site organisation.
  • Technical experience with Cisco networking equipment.
  • Proven technical experience of wide and local area networks.
  • Experience of working with third party providers of network services.
  • Experience in managing Cisco and Cisco Meraki based solutions.
  • Technical knowledge of core network systems


Desirable

  • Technical experience of Kemp load balancers.
  • Experience working to and reporting on SLA/KPIs.
  • A track record in directing and managing change and continuous improvement.
