Making the Plunge into Your Second Job After University

You survived University, your first internship, your first job, your first appraisal and your first office Christmas party. Whether you’ve been in that job for months or a couple of years, at some point you will want to see what other career opportunities are out there.

Most people find it tough to get into the job market right after they graduate. However, making the move to your second job can be even tougher. You probably know more about where you want to take your career and what you want from a job, which means this next step may well set the true direction of your career path. So, knowing when it’s the right time and having the confidence to leave your first job might just be one of the hardest career decision you’ll have to make.

Today, it is quite common for people to stay in their entry level job for 12-18 months. This is the time when they get an insight into the industry, build up the necessary skills and get an idea of what they actually want from their career. LinkedIn found that Gen X who graduated between 1986 - 1990 averaged about two job changes in their first 10 years after Uni. (LNKD, Tech30). Nowadays, the new norm for graduates is to jump jobs up to four times in their first decade out of University.

It is important for candidates to do their research and carefully consider all their options. Don’t just think about the money and ask yourself why you really want to leave your current role at what you are actually looking for in a new one. Do you feel you’re not advancing as you would have hoped and there’s no support in achieving your career goals? If the negatives outweigh the positives and if you don’t feel you’re being properly appreciated, then it might just be the time for you to start planning a strategy to make a smooth transition from your current employer to your new one.

The most successful people are the ones who aren’t afraid to move on and search new opportunities. We are here to support you in finding the job that can fulfil your career aspirations and that "feels right".
