Job description

Our Client

We are working with a train operating company, embarking on a period of transformation and investment to deliver a more efficient, reliable, and passenger-focused rail service. They are seeking an experienced Capital Accountant to strengthen the finance function and bring structure and discipline to capital finance processes.



The Role

The Capital Accountant will act as the primary finance interface for all capital projects, ensuring robust management of capital expenditure, accurate financial reporting, and effective stakeholder engagement across major infrastructure and construction initiatives.



Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the financial management of capital projects, ensuring compliance with internal controls and governance frameworks.

  • Develop and implement structured processes for capital finance, including reporting, forecasting, and control of capital spend.

  • Act as the finance business partner to project teams, providing insight, challenge, and financial guidance.

  • Manage and monitor Capex performance, ensuring alignment with corporate and departmental objectives.

  • Support the financing and management of loans from the Department for Transport (DfT).

  • Provide financial input into the development and construction of new sites and infrastructure assets.

  • Produce regular reports and analysis to support decision-making and ensure transparency of capital investment.



Skills and Experience

  • Qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent).

  • Strong background in infrastructure, construction, or major projects - experience in the rail, transport, or utilities sectors (e.g. HS2, Network Rail, large capital programmes) is essential.

  • Proven experience managing and reporting on complex capital expenditure.

  • Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills, with the ability to act as a bridge between finance and project teams.

  • Ability to design and implement new systems and processes within a developing finance environment.
