Job description

User Researcher - across several digital service lines. GDS service standards experience is preferred, but not essential.


Plan user research for the cross service line longitudinal research study

Create scripts, user journey maps, story maps and other assets necessary for valuable user research sessions as agreed by the Product Manager/Service Designer.

Provide recommendation on choice and application of user research methods to assure best practice.

Align user research activities to help the team understand changing user behaviour.

Execute user research

Use a range of quantitative and qualitative methods.

Include all kinds of users in research activities.

Testing of user research experiments, procedures and practices ahead of their deployment in the field.

Administered the distribution of incentives for participation in user research.

Analyse research data and synthesise and communicate findings

Advise on choice and application of techniques.

Run playback with the team and other relevant stakeholders after each session to share the findings.

Create assets and document research in a way that is useful for communicating and storing research findings such as research walls, qualitative and quantitative reports, videos, transcripts, and other appropriate methods as agreed by the Product Manager.

Support the team through exercises to explore and understand the user experience across the service line.

Show videos, participate in show and tells, tell compelling user stories and advocate for user's need in the service.

Discuss with the team to create actionable insights - generally in line with regular sprint cadence.

Provider and internal DfE needs are captured through research with stakeholders.

Advocate for inclusive practices and help teams design and deliver accessible services that work for all users.

Contribute to team planning and retrospectives and use the knowledge of the service's users to help inform experimentation, prototyping and product development in the Alpha phase.

Build internal user research capability.

Transfer knowledge to and mentor junior civil servant junior User Researchers so that the Civil Service can build its own user research capability.
