10 communication essentials every high-performing leader needs
At Investigo, we know that strong communication underpins every successful team. Recently, we invited Dr Hayley Lewis– a Chartered Occupational Psychologist, award-winning practitioner and lecturer in organisational psychology – to run a session with over 40 business leaders across The IN Group.
Hayley’s work focuses on leadership, organisational culture and change, with over 25 years of experience spanning senior roles in local government and consultancy. She was the perfect expert to explore how leaders can sharpen their communication skills and build high-performing teams.
Here are ten practical tips from her session that every leader should take on board:
1. Start with listening
Great dialogue begins with listening – both to what’s said and what’s not.
2. Keep it clear and concise
Follow the 7 Cs of communication: Clear, Complete, Concise, Courteous, Considerate, Correct and Concrete.
3. Explain the “why”
People buy into purpose. Show how your message connects to the bigger picture.
4. Identify your influencers
Around 3% of employees are “super influencers”. Find them and ensure they’re aligned.
5. Prepare – but stay flexible
Plan your key points, but be ready to adapt to the flow of the conversation.
6. Check for understanding
Don’t assume your message has landed. Ask for feedback or have others replay key takeaways.
7. Give feedback with empathy
Negative feedback is better received when leaders display understanding and care.
8. Manage challenging conversations
Pause before responding, use “I” statements and focus on the impact of behaviours, not personalities.
9. Build psychological safety
Encourage people to speak up, challenge ideas and share left-field solutions without fear.
10. Adapt your style
Competent communicators flex their approach, show appropriate emotion and share relevant knowledge.
Strong communication doesn’t just improve morale – it drives performance. Whether you’re leading a team or preparing to hire your next leader, these tips will help you create the conditions for success.
