Building Tomorrow's Cloud & Infrastructure Leaders: Skills, Roles, & Strategy for 2025

In this month’s tech-focused article, we spoke to Mike Freiter, to explore emerging skills, hiring trends, and what the future holds for the Cloud & Infrastructure sector. Mike shares his insights on how businesses are evolving their infrastructure strategies to meet the demands of 2025 and beyond.

What are the emerging skills and roles in Cloud & Infrastructure?

From a cloud perspective, I’m seeing a significant increase in cloud adoption among customers, who now view it as a critical component of their business strategy. This trend has only accelerated in the wake of major global events such as the COVID-19 pandemic. For many organisations, leveraging cloud infrastructure has become essential for accessing software applications, data storage, and a broad range of services via the internet, moving away from traditional on-premises servers and back-office systems.

In terms of in-demand skills, there’s strong focus on expertise across IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS platforms. The ability to design and implement secure, scalable landing zones which covers both architecture and engineering is especially sought after.

In parallel, a major initiative I’m currently supporting across several enterprise clients is the large-scale migration from Windows 10 to Windows 11, as Windows 10 approaches its end-of-support deadline this October.

How are the hiring strategies and trends in Cloud & Infrastructure changing in 2025?

This year, more than ever, I’m seeing a noticeable shift toward leveraging nearshore resources for large-scale programmes of work. There’s a growing appetite among customers for packaged workforce solutions that deliver end-to-end projects through blended teams combining UK-based talent with expertise from our specialist nearshore locations.

In my view, this model is delivering an excellent cost-to-quality ratio, enabling clients to access high-calibre solutions—whether through dedicated specialist squads or individual expert resources.

How would you describe the changing landscape of Cloud & Infrastructure?

I believe the evolving technology landscape is a positive and progressive shift. Increased investment in cloud technologies is driving greater business efficiency and fundamentally enhancing how organisations operate.

By offering a diverse range of solutions to support our customers' growth and transformation plans such as nearshore delivery models, work package solutions, and a robust virtual bench and associate network—I’m confident that our specialist technology practice is well-positioned to continue growing from strength to strength.

Where do you see Cloud & Infrastructure heading towards in 2025 and beyond?

Looking ahead to 2025 and beyond, the use of AI to automate tasks will continue to grow significantly. Organisations are increasingly leveraging AI to manage IT infrastructure and optimise workflows—reducing the need for manual intervention, enhancing efficiency, and improving overall system reliability. As a result, AI is becoming an essential tool for businesses aiming to scale and modernise their operations.
